Will advise leadership in office of secretary of U.S. Department of Health and Human Service
Jennie H. Kwon, DO, an associate professor of medicine in infectious diseases, and Jason G. Newland, MD, a professor of pediatrics, both at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, have been selected to serve on the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria.
The council advises the leadership of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on matters related to antimicrobial resistance in human, animal and environmental health.
Kwon, also section head of hospital epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship and the medical director of infection prevention at Washington University, specializes in the care of immunocompromised patients with infectious diseases. Her clinical and translational research focuses on combating antimicrobial resistance and exploring novel methods to detect, prevent and treat antimicrobial resistance. Kwon completed her ID fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in 2015.
Kwon also serves on the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which provides guidance to the federal government on practices involving infection control and strategies for surveillance, prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections, epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance in hospitals, outpatient medical centers and physician offices.
The Schnuck Family Endowed Chair in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Newland will serve as vice chair on the advisory council and will be its only voting member representing pediatrics.
Newland co-founded the Sharing Antimicrobial Reports for Pediatric Stewardship Collaborative, which involves more than 70 children’s hospitals and establishes best practices for antimicrobial use in hospitalized children. He is also vice chair of community health and strategic planning in the Department of Pediatrics.
