Adam Schafer, MD, PhD
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Dr. Adam Schafer joined WashU Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in 2026. He specializes in clinical infectious diseases, intraabdominal infections, and antibiotic stewardship. While Dr. Schafer’s research has focused on the management of complicated intra-abdominal infections, optimization of antimicrobial therapy, and clinical outcomes, his other academic interests include drug development, global health, and viral hemorrhagic fevers. Dr. Schafer enjoys teaching medical students, residents and fellows with a focus on clinical reasoning and infectious diseases education.
In addition to his faculty position, Dr. Schafer is directing the Antibiotic Stewardship Program at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. In this role, he will help build the OPAT program.
Dr. Schafer received his medical degree from University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago. He then completed his residency at Indiana University and his fellowship at University of North Carolina.
