Dr. Carlos Mejia joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases as an Instructor on July 1, 2019.
Dr. Mejia received his medical degree from Universidad San Carlos de Guatemala and later completed five years of internal medicine training at Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid, Spain. After completing his residency, he stayed in Madrid and worked as clinical researcher at La Paz University Hospital’s vascular risk unit, focusing on patients with multi-morbidity.
Dr. Mejia serves two clinics in the division, one general infectious diseases clinic focused on mycobacterial infections, and one virology clinic where he cares for people living with HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C infection; which he considers the most rewarding part of his job.
Dr. Mejia’s research interest is in general infectious disease, fungal and particularly mycobacterial infections, both Nontuberculous Mycobacteria and tuberculosis. He also has an interest in Global Health in resource-limited settings and is an active collaborator on several projects conducted at the Infectious Disease Clinic at Roosevelt Hospital and the National Program against Tuberculosis, both in Guatemala. He also serves as sub-investigator in several clinical trials run at our Infectious Disease Clinical Research Unit (ID-CRU).
