Armaghan-e-Rehman Mansoor, MD, 2nd year ID fellow, has been awarded the Jonathan Freeman Scholarship by the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA). The award recognizes outstanding infectious disease fellows who demonstrate an interest in healthcare epidemiology.
Dr. Mansoor’s primary research interest is in antibiotic stewardship, specifically in immunocompromised patients and in low resource settings. He is mentored by Jennie H. Kwon, DO, MSCI, and is participating in a study evaluating the knowledge, perception and attitudes towards COVID-19 infection, associated personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as “PPE” use, and COVID-19 vaccination in healthcare personnel in long-term non-acute care facilities. Dr. Mansoor presented the preliminary findings at IDWeek in 2022 and his work is currently provisionally accepted for publication. He is also working on a study evaluating SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity among the same cohort. With regards to antibiotic stewardship, he is currently part of a study with Dr. Sumanth Gandra and Dr. Kwon evaluating transmission of multi-drug resistant organisms, specifically carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) in a low resource ICU setting in India. Their group hopes to use the data from this study to evaluate low-intensity interventions to reduce CRE transmission in such settings.
The Jonathan Freeman Scholarship was established by SHEA to promote the training of outstanding infectious disease fellows who demonstrate interest in the field of healthcare epidemiology. The society established the scholarship in the memory of Jonathan Freeman, MD, MPH, a teacher and researcher in the field of healthcare epidemiology dedicated to improving the delivery of healthcare through the prevention of nosocomial infections. Dr. Freeman was a founding faculty member who for a decade taught the epidemiology and statistics track of the course. Awardees of the Jonathan Freeman Scholarship will receive complimentary registration for the full conference and tracks to attend SHEA Spring 2023.
