Patrick D. Olson, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor of Medicine

Patrick D. Olson joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases as an in July 2024. He completed the Medical Scientist Training Program, residency, and infectious disease fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine. His basic science interests focus on how asymptomatic colonization with Staphylococcus aureus influences the development of the immune response against the pathogen. He utilizes a combination of preclinical murine models and human immunophenotyping to investigate this. Dr. Olson specializes in the primary care of patients with HIV and other chronic viral infections. He sees patients in the WashU Medicine HIV clinic and attends on the general infectious diseases consult service at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

As the Associate Medical Director of Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Dr. Olson serves as a central liaison across the TABEX clinic, BJH pharmacists, and OPAT leadership, helping to address day-to-day operations, communication, and quality improvement for patients discharged on OPAT from BJH.

Dr. Olson also serves as Patient Safety Officer for the Infectious Diseases Division, as well as the Medical Director for the Ventricular Assist Device Infection Clinic.
