Dr. Durkin is the section chief of infectious diseases at the St. Louis VA medical center. He has extensive experience using large administrative datasets to evaluate clinical practices, adherence to guidelines, and safety/effectiveness of common medications, with a focus on antibiotics and opioids. He has leveraged the results of these findings to help build web- and EHR-based clinical decision support tools to improve the quality of patient care using qualitative methods and implementation science frameworks. He has received grant funding from AHRQ, CDC, NIH, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and the Pew Charitable Trusts.
Dr. Durkin enjoys mentoring infectious disease fellows and junior faculty who are interested in clinical research.
