The invasive fungal infections clinic is headed up by Andrej Spec, MD, MSCI. The clinic provides care for both immunocompromised (including those with cancer and organ transplant) and immunocompetent patients infected with fungus. We commonly see patients with Histoplasma, Candida, Cryptococcus, Aspergillus, Mucor, Rhizopus, Fusarium and other mycoses. We provide specialized care in a multidisciplinary way, working in close collaboration with dermatologists, surgeons, endocrinologists, otolaryngologists and pulmonologists to provide thorough care. We also provide consultation to patients referred by physicians for diagnostic evaluation and management of known or suspected fungal or granulomatous infections. We are also actively participating in several clinical trials that could provide therapeutic options for people who are intolerant of or are failing conventional therapy.
ECMM Excellence Center Diamond Status
This clinic’s expertise in laboratory and clinical mycology and commitment to diagnosis and treatment of fungal infections has resulted in recognition as a Diamond Excellence Center from the European Confederation of Medical Mycology. WashU Medicine is one of two centers in the United States and few worldwide to receive this prestigious designation.
