Anne Mobley Butler, PhD, MS, an Associate Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, and secondary faculty in the Bursky School of Public Health and the School of Medicine Division of Public Health Sciences, has been named a Fellow of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE). This recommendation by the ISPE Board of Directors reflects Butler’s sustained and meaningful contributions of scholarship, as well as substantial leadership in the discipline of pharmacoepidemiology.
As a pharmacoepidemiologist, Dr. Butler has broad research interests in non-experimental studies, real-world data, comparative effectiveness research, and epidemiologic methods. Her research involves the application of epidemiologic study designs and analytic methods to highly detailed, clinical and administrative data captured on patients as part of routine clinical care. Her substantive work focuses on the treatment and prevention of common infections, including antibiotic and vaccine utilization, effectiveness, safety, and related outcomes.
Most recently, Dr. Butler co-authored a study on two of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics for acute sinusitis in adults. The results were published this past April in JAMA. The study used large datasets from insurance claims for more than 500,000 adults over a six-year period to compare outcomes of the two antibiotics when prescribed for uncomplicated cases. Scientists hope that studies like this that use large databases can be a fast and cost-effective way to help inform which antibiotics people should receive for common conditions.
