The inaugural Collaborative ID Research Meeting, held Tuesday, May 5, launched a new forum designed to strengthen research across the Washington University School of Medicine Divisions of Infectious Diseases and Pediatric Infectious Diseases. The series is co-led by Jennifer A. Philips, MD, PhD, and Barbara W. Trautner, MD, PhD, Co-Chiefs of the Infectious Diseases Division.
At the first session, Trautner and Larissa Grigoryan, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Baylor College of Medicine, presented a proposal for an NIH grant resubmission to a group of peers. Colleagues provided targeted feedback on how to respond to the NIH review panel’s critiques and strengthen the resubmission.

Trautner noted that she and Grigoryan received concrete advice on how to shape the proposal based on reviewer comments. Both recommend the meeting series to ID colleagues, emphasizing that the feedback they received was valuable and, in their view, will increase the likelihood that their proposal will be funded in the next round.
Eligibility
Open to faculty, fellows and postdoctoral researchers in the Divisions of Infectious Diseases and Pediatric Infectious Diseases, the series offers a structured forum to gain feedback prior to submission on:
- High-impact manuscripts
- Grant proposals (including R01s)
- K awards
- Other career development awards
Strategic Use and Timing

New investigators with R01s and all clinical faculty are asked to present at least one month prior to submission to allow sufficient time to incorporate suggestions from the group.
The meetings can also serve as a venue to practice presenting. Both faculty and trainees may use this forum to rehearse talks before national or international meetings and to receive comments on clarity, organization and scientific messaging.

Each session will feature two presenters, ideally highlighting both basic (lab-based) and clinical or non-lab-based research projects. The Collaborative ID Research Meeting is expected to be a venue for building stronger proposals and manuscripts, improving presentation skills and fostering collaborative, high-impact infectious diseases research
The next Collaborative ID Research Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, with meetings scheduled through May 2027 on select Tuesday afternoons. ID participants can register online to present at an upcoming meeting. Please email Michelle Potter with any questions.
