Human Immune Response To The Ebola Vaccine (WU423)

This study is being done to understand and measure how long immune responses last in the blood, lymph nodes, and bone marrow, after a single dose of the Ebola vaccine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

We are looking for healthy adults 18 years old or older who are not at risk for exposure to Ebola virus, have not received an Ebola vaccine, and are willing to receive the Ebola vaccine and undergo study procedures.

Study Procedures Include:

If you qualify and choose to join the study, you will participate for up to 15 months (including up to 18 study visits and up to 12 phone calls). The researchers will ask you to do the following:

  • Give information about medical history relevant to the study, including medications and vaccines you have received.
  • Have your vitals (blood pressure, pulse) and temperature checked.
  • Check your height and weight.
  • Allow study health care providers to conduct physical exams.
  • Have blood samples collected for immunologic tests and genetic analysis
  • Receive an Ebola vaccine.
  • Allow clinicians to take an ultrasound of your lymph nodes and take fine needle aspirates of lymph nodes at a maximum of seven separate visits.
  • Donate a small amount of bone marrow by needle aspiration at a maximum of five separate visits.
  • Complete information on a memory aid every evening for 14 days after vaccination.

You may not participate if you:

  • Have received systemic immunosuppressants within the last 6 months or will need to receive immunosuppressants during study participation.
  • Are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are unwilling to use an effective method of contraception if you are of childbearing potential.
  • Plan to receive a vaccine or investigational drug up to 28 days after receiving study [Ebola] vaccine.
  • are not willing to refrain from receiving another investigational vaccine for Ebola or another filovirus during your study participation.
