My primary research interest involves medical helminthology, especially filariasis and other neglected tropical diseases caused by parasitic worms. I have performed extensive field research on the diagnosis, epidemiology and control of filarial parasites in Uganda, Indonesia and many other countries and have conducted basic laboratory research on filarial nematodes and their endobacterial symbionts. I am working together with Dr. Gary Weil on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded DOLF project and am PI of Objective 1, which studies alternative filariasis treatment strategies in large scale community trials in Asia and Africa. I also study North American paragonimiasis in Missouri to improve diagnostics for paragonimiasis globally.
