Nongnooch Poowanawittayakom, MD

Assistant Professor of Medicine

Dr. Poowanawittayakom interests are in bone and joint infection, infection prevention/control, hepatitis C, emerging infectious diseases, and global health.

Dr. Poowanawittayakom is the Associate Hospital Epidemiologist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH), where she is committed to advancing patient safety and infection prevention within healthcare environments. With a strong focus on infectious diseases, she collaborates closely with medical teams and infection preventionists to implement effective strategies that reduce infection transmission.

Prior to her role at BJH, Dr. Poowanawittayakom gained valuable experience in clinical quality and patient safety improvement, as well as in investigating hospital-acquired infections and outbreaks. 

She is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA) and a member of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA). As a mentor, Dr. Poowanawittayakom is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals, guiding students, residents, and junior faculty in infection prevention and clinical research, particularly in emerging diseases, surgical site infections, and microbiome-related Clostridioides difficile infections.
