Division Announcements Fellows’ Corner

Welcome ID Fellows!

The ID Division gives a warm welcome to our new fellows. We are excited that you chose WashU for your Infectious Diseases Fellowship Training and look forward to working with you.

Alex Hartlage, MD, PhD: “I was born and raised in Cincinnati. I completed my undergraduate and medical education at Ohio State University in Columbus before moving to St. Louis for my residency training. Outside of the hospital you will often find me walking my dog in Tower Grove Park, attending a STL CITY game, or working on a home improvement project.

I chose WashU for the breadth of clinical exposure, exceptional research environment, and intelligent yet humble faculty. The program also places a strong emphasis on trainee wellness and personalized career planning which stood out to me amongst other programs. St. Louis is a wonderful place to learn and train too!”

Alison Hixon, MD, PhD: “I was mostly raised in Montana (Missoula, Helena). I grew up exploring everything, and that’s what I want to continue doing for the rest of my life. I have a love of the outdoors and spend most of my free time riding bicycles (road, mountain), bird watching, camping, hiking, and rock climbing with my partner David, family, and friends.

I did my MD/PhD at the University of Colorado, followed by Internal Medicine residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. I chose to stay for fellowship due to the outstanding training opportunities in a diverse and complex patient population, amazing people (patients and colleagues), and because moving sucks!”

Christian Hendrix, MD: “I grew up moving frequently throughout the US (as well as South Korea for a brief period). I went to medical school at GW SMHS where I was involved in #ProtectOurPatients, SNMA, Social Justice Interest Group, AMSA, Community and Urban Health Track, and the ID interest group. I went to SSM Health SLU for residency training and completed a postgraduate fourth year as chief resident. My favorite hobby is group fitness class Cross Training at L.A.B. Gym.

I chose WashU for ID fellowship because I could easily see faculty as approachable mentors. I also prioritized an institution with vast resources that would expand my knowledge while supplementing my experience –all within a supportive environment.

Amy Meyer, MD: “I am from St. Louis and grew up in Oakville. I received a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Music from Truman State University in 2014 and a M.S. in Microbiology and Immunology in 2016 from Tulane University in New Orleans. I completed medical school at Mizzou in 2020, followed by a 4-year Internal Medicine/Research-Track residency at Tulane University in 2024. I enjoy live music, art, and exploring new restaurants with family and friends.

I chose WashU ID for the wealth of basic science research opportunities and for the wonderful mentorship.”

Joshua Nordman, MD: “I am from the suburbs of Chicago and went to medical school at the University of Illinois in Peroria before coming to WashU for residency. My hobbies include home projects, being good at gardening and bad at piano, and playing with my dog, Ollie.

I chose to stay at WashU for fellowship because I knew how wonderful and supportive everyone in the department was; I also had seen how well trained and kind the fellows were. I’m looking forward to learning a lot in fellowship and in the future working with underserved populations including PLWH.”
