Rupa Patel, MD, MPH, DTM&H

Associate Professor of Medicine

Rupa R. Patel, MD MPH DTM&H is an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Founder and Director of the Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for HIV Prevention (PrEP) Program at Washington University in St. Louis. She directs the CDC Midwest Capacity Building Center which provides technical assistance to state health departments, healthcare centers, and community-based organizations to train staff and  implement HIV prevention programs, including HIV/STI testing and PEP/PrEP care services. She is a member of the World Health Organization Technical Advisory Group for PrEP Implementation.

Dr. Patel specializes in biomedical HIV prevention clinical research and program development domestically and internationally. Her research includes using dissemination and implementation science methods to accelerate the integration of PrEP into routine care at the organization level at health and non-health facilities, as well as community linkage to PrEP care.

Dr. Patel cares for clients at one of the largest PrEP care centers in Missouri. She has incorporated TelePrEP and at-home, self laboratory testing into her routine practice.

She mentors trainees and fellows on various topics, including PrEP retention and adherence.

The School of Medicine’s Rupa Patel, MD, and Anne Glowinski, MD, are working with a Bangladeshi organization to help deliver mental health care to Rohingya refugees from Myanmar. Patel also is gathering forensic evidence of violence the Rohingya suffered.

  • During her fellowship, Dr. Patel founded a global health academic site for medical trainees in Bangladesh where she works on HIV prevention among migrant worker communities. In addition, she also worked in Gujarat, India on HIV risk assessments among men who have sex with men (MSM).
