Dr. Emily Spivak is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infecti ous Diseases at the University of Utah. She established and serves as Co-Di rector of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs at University of Utah Heal th and the Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. She completed her residency and fellowship training at the Johns Hopkins University Scho ol of Medicine. Prior to that\, she earned a Masters in Health Sciences in Clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Heal th.
Dr. Spivak's research interests focus on understanding patterns a nd drivers of antimicrobial use\, methods to assess appropriateness\, and d evelopment and evaluation of methods to improve antimicrobial use. She has led clinical research focused on evaluating patient outcomes related to var ious antibiotic use strategies. Dr. Spivak is also involved with national V eterans Affairs efforts to evaluate antimicrobial use\, develop tools to im prove use and dissemination and evaluation of these resources.
Dr. Sp ivak is a member of the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology (SHEA). There she ser ves on the Public Policy and Government Affairs Committee and the Antibioti c Stewardship Committee. An Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Fell ow\, Dr. Spivak serves as Vice Chair of the IDSA Antimicrobial Resistance C ommittee. She also serves as a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors to the Office of Infectious Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Spivak is also Co-Chair of the Vizient Antimicrobial Stewardship Commit tee.
