Tara Vijayan\, MD completed medical school at the Albert Einstei n College of Medicine in 2007\, where she started the school’s first and on ly literary magazine. She spent a gap year at Yale doing the Doris Duke Res earch Fellowship studying transitioning adolescents with perinatally acquir ed HIV to adult medicine before starting and completing her training in int ernal medicine and infectious diseases at the University of California\, Sa n Francisco. After fellowship\, Dr. Vijayan spent a year and a half as a pr imary care doctor for patients with HIV in Oakland\, California. She moved to UCLA in 2015 where she has been fortunate to have formal roles teaching first and second year medical students the wonderful world of microbiology and infectious diseases and had earned several teaching awards. From 2019-2 026\, she also served as the Medical Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship for the health system.
Dr. Vijayan currently serves as Medical Direct or of the CARE Clinic (serving patients with HIV) and an Associate Program Director for the UCLA Multicampus Infectious Disease Fellowship. Lastly\, s he serves as a co-editor of the State-of-the-Art Reviews in Clinical Infect ious Diseases. Her academic passions remain health equity\, clinical decisi on making\, narrative medicine and all things infectious diseases. When she is not working\, she hangs out in her sleepy little beach town with her hu sband who is a primary care doctor\, their two kids and their pup “Turtle.”
Daniel Karlin\, MD attended the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine\, where he spent a year studying the interaction of mental health and tuberculosis in Lima\, Peru\, through the Fogarty Inte rnational Clinical Research Scholarship. He continued at UCLA in the combin ed Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency\, heading toward Global Healt h until he found his calling in Palliative Care. After a fellowship at the UCSD/Scripps program\, he returned to UCLA in 2017.
Dr. Karlin has wo rked on advancing communication around serious illness\, developing curricu la from the medical school level onward\, including fellows and faculty. Hi s efforts center on managing conflicting agendas between medical teams and patients\, using communication skills to advocate for more equitable care\, and growing the intersection of Palliative Care with other specialties.
He currently serves as the Medical Director of Palliative Care for the Motion Picture Television Fund and the Chair of the From the Heart Fund at UCLA. He lives in Agoura Hills with his partner\, two daughters\, and (yes\ , they came with these names) Dodger Dog and Runty Runt.
